About Philip Hosfeldt
Southern Illinois is a place that is dear to my heart. I have grown up in Johnson County and attended classes at Shawnee Community College before moving on to Southern Illinois University and eventually to McKendree University for my Master’s degree. The schools in this area instilled in me a love of learning and it is that feeling that drives me as an educator today as I seek to share this passion with my students and my own son. As an administrator, I continue to give all that I have every day in order to pass on those skills to the next generation of students.
I am a first generation college graduate from a low-income family and I believe that I pass along those same attitudes of dedication to the work that I do and to my students. Both of my parents grew up as hard-working people and that same spirit of “never quit until it is done” is reflected in my work ethic. During my time as an educator I not only worked to help inspire my students in the classroom, but I also started and maintained a successful competitive IHSA speech program in which our high school of 180 students continually placed in the top 5 against schools with over 2000 students. I believe that any student can learn the skills and abilities needed for them to succeed regardless of their origins and I will bring that same drive to my new position.
I graduated from SIUC in a tumultuous time in US history. I was just coming into the career field as the Great Recession was ravishing the country. Because of this I moved from career to career over my first 10 years out of college. I have worked at a bank, sold insurance and eventually become a licensed funeral director intern. At the time, I could not understand why life was taking me in the directions that it was, as my main passion still resided in education. However, now that I am an administrator all those years spent in private industry and in business have greatly increased my capacity for successful in this current career, and for what life throws my way in the future.
